First year in Finland – grateful, surprised and excited

Arrival in Finland: expectations and reality

When we moved to Finland in December 2023, I didn’t have a clear picture of what our life here would be like. Now, after living in Finland for more than a year, I can say that this year has been different from what I expected – but better.

Adapting to Culture and Language

Adapting to a new country and culture is not always easy. Fortunately, Germany and Finland are not that far apart (at least culturally, the weather is a separate issue…). The biggest and most meaningful part of this trip has been learning Finnish.

Finnish is a language that is as unique as it is challenging. It is one of the most difficult languages in Europe, and learning it is a major challenge for many. There are around 5.5 million Finnish speakers, yet worldwide Finnish is a small language. What makes Finnish special are its complex grammatical rules, especially with its extensive use of cases – there are 15 different cases! This makes Finnish unique, but also quite difficult to learn. The language also has a fluid word order and its own specific set of grammar rules, which can be quite overwhelming at first. But the more you immerse yourself, the more you can appreciate its beauty and structure.

I am extremely grateful that I was able to participate in the integration training here in Hämeenlinna – and even more grateful that I had Tiina as my teacher.

Stepping into Photography: Photographing Depth of Character

Tiina is a teacher who not only teaches the language, but also supports, encourages and makes her students feel welcome. Her teaching has made a deep impression on me, and when she agreed to come to my studio to be photographed, I felt a great sense of gratitude and joy. It was wonderful to be able to photograph someone with such a rich and warm personality. I wanted to capture her depth, her strength and the gentle energy she conveys to her surroundings.

The photoshoot was not only fun, but also a special reminder of how much can happen in a year. How much one can learn, grow, and build new connections. This first year in Finland has been full of surprises, but above all, it has been full of kindness. And one of the most important things this year has taught me? That the right people make a new place feel like home.

Viktoria is a warm-hearted photographer who guides you with professionalism and without being too demanding. The finished images are of incredible quality and quality. I definitely recommend to visit her!
