Business photos are not just supposed to be “nice pictures”. They should be about who you are, what you do and why you’re the one to trust. That’s why the biggest difference between a regular and a specialist business photographer is not the camera – it’s the way you think.
When you work with a photographer who understands the importance of the visual line, you don’t just get pictures. You get a partner who helps you clarify what your brand really looks like.
And sometimes it also means having the courage to admit: we tried something, it worked great technically – but it wasn’t quite right.
A circle is not always a step back
A good example is Virpi Hach and her company Finnishtogo. Last week we had our third shoot together.
The first time we shot outside in Hämeenlinna. We wanted to show Virpi in a typical Finnish environment: natural, approachable and truly herself. The pictures turned out lively, relaxed and very “Virpi-like”.
In the second shoot we went to the studio. Virpi had had her hair and make-up done by a professional, and the result was beautiful. Really beautiful. In the photos she looked stylish, elegant and powerful.
But when Virpi started using the photos in her everyday life, something started to feel a little off.
Virpi’s work is very practical: she films and videotapes herself on the phone in everyday situations and teaches people to speak Finnish. Her style of social media and video is relaxed, authentic and “everyday”. The studio pictures were great – but they no longer felt like the same person who spoke to the camera in the kitchen, on the street or at her desk.
It was not that the studio style was “wrong”. It just wasn’t right for her brand in that particular form.
Third shoot: back to the core
In the third photoshoot we went sort of full circle.
We combined the studio and the outdoor environment, but Virpi decided to stick to her own, familiar style: light everyday make-up, natural hair, the look people already recognise from her videos and speech.
This time, the pictures felt right straight away. They matched her phone pictures, videos and everyday message. They didn’t look “better” than her – they looked like her.
And that is the essence of branding.
The visual line is not a trend! It’s about recognisability
This is where branding for a company is much more than a single day of shooting – it’s a decision to look like the same person everywhere you go.
Or in other words: branding is not about looking your best. It’s about looking consistent.
If people see you first in a studio photo and then on video from your phone camera, they should recognise you as the same person. Same vibe, same energy, same style – even if the environment changes.
Sometimes a stylist and make-up artist are exactly the way to go. For example:
- when building a strong expert image
- when targeting a specific campaign or launch
- when there is a conscious desire to break away from a more everyday look
But sometimes the best advice is: stick with what’s already working.
It is not the job of a specialist business photographer to force you into a particular format. My job is to look at the big picture and ask questions:
- How do you really work?
- Where do people see you most often?
- What are you like when you are at your best?
And then build images around it.
Customizing is at the heart of everything
Virpi’s story was not about making a mistake, but about learning. She wanted to try something different – and it was absolutely the right decision. Without it, we wouldn’t have known so clearly what really felt like her own.
That’s why I never offer a one-size-fits-all solution. Every entrepreneur, expert and brand is different. For some, bold styling is exactly what brings out their confidence. For another, the biggest strength is looking exactly the way you do in your everyday life.
My job is to help you find the point where:
- you feel like yourself
- your customers recognise you instantly and
- your images support what you really do
It is a visual line. It’s not about following trends, but about building recognition over the long term.
And sometimes that means going round in a small circle – to get exactly in the right direction.
