What is a good headshot? – 5 important elements

How to take a good headshot?

A good headshot is not just a pretty picture – it must also communicate the right message. It helps you to be seen as a professional and a personality. A really eye-catching LinkedIn photo can even help change your life path. But what are the things that really make a great headshot?

Here are the five most important elements:

1. Appearance and essence

The best headshot feels natural. Do you want to look approachable, confident or knowledgeable? The look and feel of your image will influence how you are perceived. A professional photographer will help you relax and get the right mood. A smile, a serious or neutral expression can all work, as long as they suit you and your job role. A good photographer can guide you so that you feel comfortable in front of the camera.

In particular, it pays to carefully design your LinkedIn photo, as it’s often the first thing potential co-workers or employers see about you.

2. Light and background

Good light works wonders. It brings out facial features and gives your photo a professional look. Natural light can be soft and flattering, but in the studio you can control the light with precision. For example, soft lighting is ideal for classic headshots, while harsher light can give your image a more dynamic and intense feel. The background is also important – it should support you, not distract you. A simple background, such as a neutral colour or softly hazy surroundings, is usually best.

3. Clothing and style

How you dress has a big impact on the first impression you make. Choose clothes that fit your brand and feel good on you. Simple colours and a clean style always work. Avoid colours that are too bright or big prints that can distract from your face. If you wear jewellery or accessories, keep them understated unless your style is a bold and personal look.

It’s also worth thinking about hair and make-up beforehand – a natural but polished look works best. If you book a shoot with me, we’ll discuss clothing options beforehand, and I’m happy to recommend several very good local make-up artists.

4. Framing and composition

A well-defined image draws the eye to the face. Is the picture straight on or slightly from the side? The framing and the angle of view can have a big impact on the feeling you get from the picture. For example, a straight-on eye contact gives a confident and open impression, while a slight side profile can feel more relaxed and contemplative. When framing, it’s also a good idea to think about the purpose of the images – for example, do you want space for text or a logo?

5. Image quality

The main one! A good headshot is of high technical quality. Sharpness, colours and light are all right, and the image is not grainy or blurred. That’s why a picture taken by a professional is always a good investment. A quality image will stand the test of time and work well across a variety of channels – LinkedIn, a company website or even a newspaper interview.

A good headshot gives you a first impression that sticks in your mind. For more tips or to book a photo shoot, read more here!
